Most people want to stay in their homes as long as possible. But what do we do when we or our family members need more help than is available in the home? Care in a nursing home or assisted living facility can cost several thousand dollars per month. How do we pay for care that’s beyond our budgets and find facilities that can meet our care and quality needs?
Texas’ Area Agencies on Aging can help.
They have benefits counseling programs that help Medicare beneficiaries understand public benefits, including Medicare and Medicaid. They also have long-term care ombudsman programs that provide objective information to people who are thinking about placement. This includes providing a list of facilities that participate in the Medicaid program and sharing survey data.

Texas’ Medicaid program can pay for care in both nursing and assisted living facilities for people who have low incomes, limited resources, and medical need for care in a nursing facility. To help people understand its complex rules, the North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging has prepared a booklet entitled “Understanding Your Options for Care in a Nursing or Assisted Living Facility.” It explains Medicare and Medicaid coverage, including Medicaid protections for married couples.
