Nelly moved to the U.S. from Haiti in 2021, bringing with her a heart full of dreams and a strong sense of purpose. As a child, she aspired to become a doctor or a lawyer—roles that reflected her deep desire to help others. While adjusting to a new language and a different system presented challenges, Nelly embraced each step of the journey with courage and determination. Her story is one of perseverance, growth, and unwavering hope.
“I always loved caring for people,” she said. “People told me, ‘You can do this—just start step-by-step.’ So I did.”

Caregiver Spotlight – Nelly!
Nelly earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license on her first try and began working in nursing facilities. After facing two knee injuries and hospital visits from lifting patients, she realized she needed a new path—one that would let her continue helping others in a more sustainable way. That’s when a family member introduced her to Senior1Care.
“I still remember my interview. It didn’t feel like an interview—it felt like family,” Nelly said. “Everyone was kind, welcoming, and made me feel like I belonged.”
Now working one-on-one with clients, Nelly thrives. “The most important thing is to understand the person first,” she says. “Every client is different, and I always take time to listen and observe before jumping in. That’s how I learn what they need.”
Her empathy runs deep. “I always remind myself—this person had a whole life before I met them. Helping them now, with small things like daily tasks, is an honor. And when you show love and kindness, I believe it comes back to you.”
Though she hasn’t yet reached her childhood dream of becoming a doctor, Nelly still hopes to become a nurse someday. “I know I have what it takes—but sometimes I get nervous because of my English. I don’t always feel like people understand me. But I’m not giving up.”
Outside of work, Nelly finds joy in creativity. She’s a talented event planner—organizing birthdays, baby showers, and even making “cakes” from fresh fruit for her loved ones. “I don’t do it for money,” she laughs. “I just love making people feel special.”
Nelly also cherishes her family. She’s the oldest of five and helped raise her younger siblings in Haiti while her mother worked. Though she doesn’t have children of her own, her nieces and nephews play a huge part in her life. “They call me for everything—birthdays, advice, school events. I may not be a mom, but I feel like I have many kids.”
Nelly’s advice to new caregivers: “Be patient. Be kind. And don’t expect love to be returned right away—but give it anyway. Sometimes, the empathy only flows one way, but it still matters. It always matters.”
